Tour Overview

Why you'll love this tour

The Self-Drive 1-Day Safari is for travellers who like the freedom of their own vehicle but still want the reassurance of a properly arranged game reserve experience. You drive from Cape Town, arrive at the reserve, and join the scheduled safari activities without having to organise the reserve details yourself.

The day includes ranger-led wildlife viewing and lunch, making it a practical option if you already have a rental car and want flexibility around your departure or onward travel.

Because the reserve is a proper drive from the city, an early start makes all the difference. We help you plan the timing clearly so you can arrive relaxed, make the most of the day and enjoy the open-road feeling of a Cape safari outing.

Trip Itinerary

We recommend departing Cape Town by 07:00 so you can enjoy the full safari experience. Drive through the vineyards and rolling hills of the Klein Karoo toward the private reserve (around 2 h 30 min from Cape Town via the N1 and Huguenot Tunnel), soaking up changing landscapes as you go.

Once you arrive, you’ll be welcomed with a warm drink and meet your professional ranger before heading out on your open-air 4×4 game drive. Over the next couple of hours, keep your eyes peeled for elephants, lions, buffalo and other wildlife roaming in their natural habitat. If conditions allow, you might even enjoy a walk with giraffes, guided by the ranger.

After your safari loop, spend time at the lion preservation project and learn about conservation efforts that protect these magnificent predators. Then relax over a leisurely lunch beneath shady trees or in the atmospheric boma-style restaurant.

With wildlife sightings fresh in your memory, you’re free to linger at the reserve — whether swimming in the pool (in summer) or enjoying a cozy fireplace (in winter) — before making the scenic drive back to Cape Town as the day winds down.

You’ll depart using your own vehicle, so we suggest leaving no later than about 07:00 to make the most of your day. The reserve is malaria-free, making it ideal for families and travellers not wanting long travel times.

Tour Questions

No. You drive your own vehicle to the reserve. Wildlife viewing is then handled through scheduled reserve activities, usually with a qualified ranger in a safari vehicle.

An early start is recommended, often around 07:00 depending on the reserve schedule and your accommodation. We will confirm timing before you travel.

If you are not comfortable driving, choose a guided safari with transfers instead. The self-drive option is best for guests who already feel confident with their rental car.

Yes, with sensible pacing. Tell us the ages of the children and we will keep the route realistic, with enough time for breaks and shorter stops where needed.
