Tour Overview

Why you'll love this tour

The Winelands Wanderlust Full-Day Escape is a private day through Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, with wine tastings, cellar stories, mountain views and a relaxed journey through one of the Cape’s most beautiful regions.

The day brings together some of the Winelands’ best-loved experiences: tastings at selected estates, a cheese tasting, time in the cellar, and an exciting ride on the Franschhoek Wine Tram as it rolls through vineyard scenery and historic wine country.

You’ll also visit Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela spent the final part of his captivity before walking free in 1990. It adds a powerful layer of South African history to a day already filled with wine, scenery, conversation and the easy pleasure of not having to drive.

Trip Itinerary

Your day begins with a convenient pick-up directly from your Cape Town hotel or hostel, ensuring a smooth and comfortable start to the tour. If you’re staying in an Airbnb or private residence, simply let us know by email and we’ll make the necessary arrangements. Your booking confirmation will include your exact pick-up time, which is scheduled according to your location.

Leaving the city behind, you travel into the scenic landscapes of Stellenbosch, just a short drive from Cape Town. This historic university town is the centre of South Africa’s wine culture, surrounded by vineyards and dramatic mountain scenery. You’ll learn about the region’s signature grape varieties, including Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, and the proudly South African Pinotage, as well as the traditional Méthode Cap Classique used in local sparkling wines. There is time to enjoy a wine tasting at a carefully selected estate and explore the town.

The journey continues to Franschhoek, a charming village shaped by French Huguenot heritage. With its leafy streets, elegant estates, and relaxed atmosphere, Franschhoek is a highlight of the Cape Winelands. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy wine tastings and sample local specialities such as artisanal cheeses. Depending on availability, the experience may include a ride on the iconic Franschhoek Wine Tram, offering beautiful views over vineyards and mountain slopes.

Between Franschhoek and Paarl, the tour pauses at Drakenstein Prison (formerly Victor Verster Prison). This is where Nelson Mandela spent the final months of his imprisonment before his release in February 1990. You’ll see the famous statue of Mandela with his raised fist, a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and South Africa’s democratic journey.

The final leg of the tour takes you through the scenic outskirts of Paarl, framed by the striking granite formations of Paarl Mountain. One of South Africa’s oldest towns, Paarl is known for its rich history, renowned wine estates, and beautiful natural setting. Your guide will share insights into the town’s early Dutch settlement, its role in South African history, and the origin of its name, inspired by the pearl-like glow of the surrounding rock formations.

In the late afternoon, you’ll begin the scenic drive back to Cape Town. Sit back and relax as you pass vineyards, mountains, and rolling countryside, reflecting on a day spent exploring the heart of the Cape Winelands. You’ll be dropped off at your original pick-up point, arriving back in the city with wonderful memories and perhaps a bottle or two to enjoy later.
