Tour Overview

Why you'll love this tour

The Whale Route Roadtrip is a beautiful coastal day from Cape Town towards Hermanus, following sea views, mountain roads, small towns and fynbos landscapes into one of the Cape’s best-known whale-watching areas.

During Southern right whale season, the day is all about the excitement of watching the coastline for movement: a tail, a breach, a dark shape rising in the bay. Land-based whale watching is the main focus, with boat-based options possible where available and suitable.

Outside the main whale months, this still works beautifully as a relaxed Overberg road trip. Clarence Drive, Betty’s Bay, Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, Hermanus and other coastal viewpoints can all shape the day, depending on weather, season and the pace you enjoy.

Trip Itinerary

We’ll collect you from your Cape Town accommodation early in the morning and head south along the dramatic False Bay coast. Our route takes us through postcard-perfect seaside towns like Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay, each with its own tranquil bay views and photographic stops along the way.

Your first major stop is Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a 2 000 ha spread of coastal mountain and fynbos terrain, excellent for short walks and wildlife spotting. Next, we’ll visit the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, where paths wind through lush gardens and offer peaceful views out to sea.

As we arrive in Hermanus, you’ll have time to explore this charming seaside town and its famous cliff-top walkways — some of the world’s best land-based whale-watching spots. In season (June to November), Southern right whales gather in Walker Bay to mate and calve, and you’ll often see them breach or spout close to shore.

For an even closer encounter, you can choose to join an optional boat-based whale watching tour (extra cost), which takes you out onto the bay for a marine-level perspective of these magnificent animals.

Enjoy leisure time in Hermanus for lunch (not included), where seaside cafés and restaurants overlook the bay — a perfect spot to relax and swap photos. Afterward, we’ll begin the scenic drive back toward Cape Town, winding through lush valleys and over Sir Lowry’s Pass with the ocean in view.

By late afternoon you’ll be on the road back, arriving in Cape Town with memories of ocean horizons, cliff walks and whale sightings that will stay with you long after the journey ends.
