Tour Overview

Why you'll love this tour

The Self-Drive 2-Day Safari gives you the freedom of your own vehicle with the reward of an overnight stay in a malaria-free game reserve. It is a great option if you want more than a quick day visit, but still prefer to travel independently from Cape Town.

You drive to the reserve, check in, and settle into a short safari rhythm of lodge meals, ranger-led game drives and quiet time between activities. With a night in the reserve, the experience feels more complete and far less hurried.

It works best for travellers who are comfortable on South African roads and enjoy the flexibility of self-driving. We help with the timing and practical details so the journey feels realistic, easy to follow and worth the distance.

Trip Itinerary

Kick off your self-drive safari by departing Cape Town early (ideally around 07:00) and heading inland through vineyards, valleys and rolling Karoo scenery. After a scenic journey of about 2.5–3 hours you’ll arrive at the private game reserve, where the openness of Africa awaits. Enjoy welcome drinks and a bush-style lunch under shaded trees or in a traditional boma restaurant before your first wildlife adventure.

As the afternoon light softens, meet your ranger and climb aboard an open-air 4×4 for your early-evening game drive. This is when animals are most active — elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes and more roam freely across the plain, offering prime viewing opportunities. As sunset settles over the reserve, savour the colours of the bush and return to your lodge for dinner and a restful night.

After a hearty breakfast at your lodge, enjoy the morning game drive, a chance to catch wildlife activity in the crisp early hours. Your knowledgeable ranger will share insights into animal behaviour and bush ecology as you explore deeper into the reserve. Time permitting, you may have a chance to walk with giraffes — a gentle, memorable experience guided by the ranger.

Following your safari loop, take time to relax over lunch and soak up the final moments of the bush around you — perhaps by the pool or next to a crackling fireplace, depending on the season. Then begin your self-drive journey back to Cape Town through the scenic Klein Karoo and over the Huguenot Tunnel, enriched with memories of wildlife, landscapes and safari serenity.

Depart early: Leaving by around 07:00 helps you make the most of wildlife activity and game drive windows. Own vehicle: You’ll be responsible for your transport — fuel, navigation and time management, but this also gives you flexibility and control. Seasonal flexibility: Weather and reserve conditions may influence game drive timing, optional experiences like giraffe walks, and lodge dinner arrangements.

Tour Questions

The reserve stay, scheduled game drives and meals listed in the itinerary are included. Fuel, tolls, vehicle rental and personal extras are separate.

Usually no. You drive to the reserve on normal roads and join ranger-led activities once there. We will confirm any vehicle requirements before you book.

It is better if you want a slower pace, a lodge night and wildlife activity at stronger times of day. The one-day option is better if your schedule is tight.

Yes, with sensible pacing. Tell us the ages of the children and we will keep the route realistic, with enough time for breaks and shorter stops where needed.
